Okay. You know that sexy look of a wallet chain dangling from someone’s hip. It might be on a rocker or country music star. Or it may be from the James Dean poster, or from that biker or skater on the street. Either way it’s a statement for sure. So why don’t more women wear wallet chains?

The obvious answer would be that it’s usually an accessory associated with men. And it’s associated with men because women typically carry their celebrity wallets in their purses, not their pockets. But I’ll let you in on a secret: you don’t need a wallet to wear a wallet chain!

Sure, wallets and chains are sold together and shown together all the time. You might see them called biker wallets or chain wallets or trucker wallets. One side clips to a belt loop and the other side clips to a wallet. But you may not have realized that you can buy just “wallet chains” without wallets, and you can connect them to anything you want!

Like what, you ask? Well the first and easiest choice is jeans or pants or anything with belt loops. You can wear one end clipped to a loop in front and the other end clipped to a loop in the back thus draping over your hip or tummy. Or you can clip one end to a loop in the back and put your keys on the other end and drop them into your front pocket, again achieving the dangle/drape. And if you get a long enough chain you can use it as a belt!

Yes this is a statement piece, not for everyone, but if you have the right attitude you can pull it off. Here are a few tips when shopping for your chain:

1. Wallet chains come in all sizes and lengths. Be sure yours are in proportion with your body. If you’re smaller in stature, look for thinner chains that are lighter and choose styles that are 8″ or 16″ long. If you’re taller, you can pull off either thin or medium thickness, 16″ or 22″ length chains. And bigger or bolder women get even bigger and bolder choices!

2. Take a close look at the clips on each end and make sure they are quality pieces. Clips with a swivel base are best because they allow your chain to lie flat and not get twisted up. And, since the clips are likely going to show when you wear them, you don’t want anything dinky or cheap.

3. Consider doubling your pleasure (and your style) with a double wallet chain. You can’t go wrong with a classic ball chain wallet chain or any thin link style. Again, don’t overwhelm your body but do try this look. And if you’re up to a triple wallet chain, go for it!

4. If you’re wearing your wallet chain as a belt, make sure you have enough length to have a “drop” at the end, and finish that off with a cool clip-on attachment or key chain or pendant to add your own stamp to the look.

5. Most wallet chains can also be worn as necklaces. Or they can be hooked on your purse, briefcase, or bag straps instead of on your body. Your only limits are your imagination.
